Have you ever wondered what little creatures call the waters home? These booklets are intended for anyone (youth and adult alike) wanting to explore the wonderful world of Ontario's benthic-macroinvertebrate community. Benthic (bottom-dwelling) Macro (small) Invertebrates (spineless) or "benthics" are insects and other creatures that live in the bottom of wetlands, streams, rivers, and lakes. They often have a "double-life", living out the start of their journeys in the water, and later, developping wings in their adult stage. A common example that most people are familiar with are dragonflies! They are very important parts of our aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, feeding many amphibians, reptiles, fish, birds and more. They are fascinating and can be an important indicator of water quality. All you need is a net and a bucket!
